Collation: a-z8 A-C8 2A10 (a1r woodcut title, a1v list of contents, a2r text, C8r colophon, woodcut printer's device, C8v blank, 2A1r tabula). 216 leaves (of 218, lacking a1-2, a1 title supplied from the second (Toledo) edition of 1526 and printed in red and black, a2 supplied in manuscript). 44-45 lines and headline, double column, printed shoulder notes. Type: 4:144G, 5:98G, 1:82G. Full-page woodcut title, woodcut ornamental and historiated initials, 3- to 5-line initial spaces, some with guide-letter. (Title remargined with a little loss, last leaf on guard and with minor tears at edges, neat repaired tears in about 10 leaves, affecting a few letters in B1, repaired marginal tears in several others, light stain at upper inside margin.) 19th-century panelled calf gilt by Winstanley of Manchester, with his ticket, marbled edges (lightly stained, backstrip missing, boards detached). Provenance: some early marginal annotations washed -- W. B. Chorley (title stamp).
FIRST EDITION. Lopez de Ayala was a Castilian courtier, poet and historian. His History of the Kings of Castile derives from direct observation as well as research; the first edition contains the history of the reign of Pedro I, Henry II of Castile, and John I. One of 8 recorded copies, only 4 of which are complete.
