8° (190 x 125 mm). Folding lithographic diagram. Bound without the advertisements sometimes found in other copies. (Some quires starting, with resultant proud fore-edges slightly frayed.) Uncut in original green cloth, covers stamped in blind, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, black glazed endpapers [Freeman's variant 'c' binding] (covers lightly scuffed, edges rubbed especially at corners, inner hinges cracking, the whole slightly loose). Provenance: presentation copy (inscribed by the publisher's clerk, 'From the author').

PRESENTATION COPY OF THE FIFTH EDITION. This edition sees the first use by Darwin of Herbert Spencer's phrase 'survival of the fittest', appearing in the heading of Chapter IV. Freeman 387.
