DRUMMOND DE MELFORT, Louis-Hector [Comte de] (1721-1788). Traité sur La Cavalerie. Paris: Guillaume Desprez, 1776.

Engraved allegorical frontispiece by Ingouf, 11 full-page engravings by Dupuis, some double-page, some folding, vignettes by Van Blaremberghe throughout. Bound-in letter by the Duchesse de Melfort, dated July 1773. (Atlas: marginal mostly light spotting and staining, repairs, some early, to verso of some plates, some faint offsetting. Text: some short marginal tears, scattered spotting, occasional light browning.) Contemporary red morocco by Tiger, with his ticket, preserved in leather-backed clamshell boxes, gilt fillet and arms, spine with gilt floral decoration in compartments and gilt title, gilt edges, gilt turn-ins, blue endpapers (extremities rubbed, endpapers stained at margins). Provenance: Armand-Thomas Hue de Miromesnil (binding) -- Vicomtesse de Fontenay (bookseller's note) -- Richard Penard y Fernandez (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION. AN EXCELLENT, FINELY BOUND COPY FROM THE LIBRARY OF THE FRENCH MINISTER ARMAND-THOMAS HUE DE MIROMESNIL. Drummond spent most of his life involved with cavalry and for his last eight years was Lieutenant-General of Louis XVI's army. His work lays out, with illustrations, the simplified procedures for cavalrymen that he advocated as early as 1748, which had often met with incomprehension and disbelief. The dedication expresses Drummond's hope that this work will assist in making the French cavalry the best in the world and his wish to help the country that his family fled to on their forced emigration from Scotland nearly a century before. Armand-Thomas Hue de Miromesnil (1723-1796) was Keeper of the Seals from 1774-1787, after having held several other official positions. On his death, at his request, the contents of his library were sold and the profits distributed amongst the poor. Brunet II: 842; Cohen-de Ricci pp.326-327. (2)
