THOMSON, John. Street Incidents. London: Sampson, Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington, 1881.

4° (280 x 215mm). 21 woodburytypes, each c. 115 x 90mm, or the reverse, mounted as issued on leaves with frames and captions printed in red. (A few plates loose, title and last leaf browned, some spotting, marginal soiling, but the woodburytypes in good state.) Publisher's illustrated red cloth, front board blocked with an all-over design in gilt and black (worn, soiled and stained, front endpaper detached, front hinge split).

First edition of this abridgement, with 21 woodburytypes, of Thomson's pioneering Street Life in London -- a work described as 'one of the most significant and far-reaching photobooks in the medium's history' (The Photobook). 'Few photographs of the London streets had been taken before Thomson's journey around them, and even fewer were published with the intent of informing public opinion' (Ovenden). The excellent woodburytypes, which include the highly important 'The Crawler', were made from Thomson's original dry-plate negatives; 'the resultant prints give a strikingly sharp, almost three-dimensional presentation' (Ovenden). Cf. (for the 1877-8 edition): Ovenden, John Thomson, pp. 78-88; The Photobook, vol. I, p.48; The Truthful Lens 169.
