4° (270 x 205mm). Ruled pages. Woodcut device on title, woodcut and type-ornament headpieces, historiated initials. (Occasional light dust-soiling in upper margin, light spotting on title.) Contemporary French red morocco gilt, central arms of Nicolas II Le Clerc de Lesseville [Olivier 1352, fer 1], gilt spine, turn-ins and edges, marbled endpapers (lightly rubbed at extremities, tiny wormhole at rear hinge). Provenance: Nicolas II Le Clerc de Lesseville, siegneur du Mesnil, de Thun et de Durand (1642-1737; binding) -- Dukes of Devonshire, Chatsworth (bookplate of William, 7th Duke; sale Christie's, 30 September 1980, lot 1).

FINE, LARGE-PAPER COPY of the first translation into French of the Apophtegmata collected from Plutarch, Diogenese Laertes, and other classical authors. Perrot d'Ablancourt's translation of these and other works helped form classical taste in the mid-17th century and influenced French prose style. Hoffmann Greek, III, 217.
