BRANTÔME, Pierre de Bourdeilles, Seigneur de (c.1540-1614). Oeuvres. Nouvelle édition considérablement augmentée, et accompagnée de remarques historiques et critiques. The Hague: 'Aux dépens du libraire', 1740.
15 volumes, 12° (81 x 134mm). Titles in red and black, 14 engraved frontispieces by and after J.V. Schley, some repeats, engraved frontispiece portrait of Brantôme by Schley and 6 folding letterpress tables in volume XV. (Some light browning and occasional light spotting.) Contemporary French red morocco gilt, arms of Madame de Pompadour [Olivier 2399 fer 4] on sides within triple fillet border, flat spines in panels with olive morocco lettering-pieces, repeated fleurons and corners sprays, gilt turn-ins and coloured floral endpapers, blue silk markers, gilt edges (some light scuff marks on covers, some spines a little rubbed at head, a few tiny wormholes). Provenance: Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson, marquise de Pompadour (1721-1764; binding) -- Dukes of Devonshire (sold Christie's, 30th September 1981, lot 63).
MADAME DE POMPADOUR'S COPY WITH HER ARMS. A slightly different fer is used for the arms on volume I, and the floral endpapers in this volume also differ from the others. This copy contains 8 different frontispiece designs by Schley whereas Cohen/de Ricci calls for only 7. AN EXQUISITE SET. Brunet I, 1211; Cohen/de Ricci 185; Quérard I, 493. (15)
