[MONTESSON, Charlotte-Jeanne Beraud de la Haie de Riou, marquise de (1746-1802)]. Oeuvres anonymes. Théatre [7 volumes] and: Mélanges [one volume]. Paris: Didot l'aîné, 1782-1785.
Together 8 volumes, 8° (222 x 138mm). Half-titles. Titles with engraved vignette by Prevost after Jombert, woodcut headpiece in vol. IV of Théatre. Vol. VI with final unnumbered text leaf. (Browning to vols. VI-VII.) Vols. I-V of Théatre and Melanges in red morocco gilt by Derome le Jeune with his ticket in vol. I, vols. VI-VII in near uniform morocco of slightly later date, flat spines in ruled and tooled compartments, triple fillets on sides, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, silk markers, gilt edges (a few wormholes at joints, light marks and scratches on covers, occasional rubbing or bumping at edges, final two vols. of Théatre slightly affected by damp). Proveance: A.L. McLaughlin (bookplate; sale Sotheby's Monaco, 7 October 1980, lot 1869).
A RARE COLLECTION printed on papier d'Annonay, six of the volumes bound by Derome. As Quérard notes, Mad. de Montesson had only a tiny number of copies printed for her most intimate circle ('12 dit-on'), and none was for sale. All the plays were presented in her own theatre and being 'une excellente actrice de societé' she frequently played roles herself. Although described as volume I, the Mélanges of prose and poetry was not followed by others. Brunet IV, 164; Quérard 248: 'cette collection, devenue très rare, est rangée maintenant parmi les livres precieux'. (8)
