PLUTARCH (c. 46-c. 120). La vie des hommes illustres, grecs et romains ... troisieme edition, translated by Jaques Amyot. Paris: Vascosan, 1567. 6 volumes, 8° (158 x 101mm). Text ruled in red. Extra-illustrated with an engraved frontispiece, engraved portrait of Amyot by Marchand after Ponce and 15 plates. (Some even light browning, a little spotting.)
PLUTARCH. Les Oeuvres morales et meslées ... seconde edition, translated by J. Amyot. Paris: Vascosan, 1574. 6 volumes in 7, including table, 8°. Extra-illustrated with a repeat portrait of Amyot and 2 engraved plates. (Some browning to titles and first leaf of the table, title to vol. V with erased signature at foot, a little light spotting, quires A-C of table with blue ink stain at upper margin.)
Decade, contenant les vies des empereurs ... extraictes de plusiers autheurs, Grecs, Latins & Espagnols, translated by Antoine Allègre from the Spanish of Antonio de Guevara. Paris: Vascosan, 1567. 8°. Ruled in red. Extra-illustrated with 2 engraved plates. Second edition.
Together 14 volumes, uniform late 18th-century red morocco attributed to Derome, triple fillet border, spine gilt in six panels, two directly lettered, the four others with repeated floral motifs, gilt inner dentelles, gilt edges (light scuff marks, a little rubbing to extremities). Provenance: early 19th-century bibliographical note (on front free endpaper of vol. I of Les vies) -- 'CC' (bookstamp) -- 'RS' (bookplate) -- Charles Nodier (morocco label).
FINE SET of these charming vernacular editions by Michael Vascosan, the royal printer, with later engraved plates after Moreau le jeune, A. Borel, C.P. Marillier, Le Barbier l'ainé, J. Marchand and Myris, taken from the first 12 volumes of Cussac's celebrated edition of 1783-1805. Despite the gap in publication, Brunet treats Amyot's two translations as a single edition, also noting that the Décade was frequently added to it. The luxurious morocco binding on this set is attributed to Derome by its early owner. Adams P-1623 & P-1643; Brunet IV, 737:'très belle édition, dont les exemplaires bien conservé sont toujours recherchés des curieux'; cf. Cohen/de Ricci 810 (Cussac edition). (14)
