Lot Essay

The scene on the lid is copied after a stipple print by Francesco Bartolozzi (1727-1815) titled Playing at Thread the Needle, which is after an original painting by William Hamilton (1751-1801). For an extensive discussion of this scene and similar Swiss enamel miniatures, see H. Bockh, 'Jean-Louis Richter, peintre genevois sur émail (1766-1841): son mode de travail et le choix de ses motifs', in Genava, new series, XXXI, 1983, pp. 102-104.
