William, Prince of the House of Orange-Nassau, married Mary, daughter of James, Duke of York, in 1677. On the death of Charles II, Mary's father, a Catholic, ascended the throne as King James II of England and VII of Scotland. William was called to the throne by Parliament to depose the Catholic King and following the Glorious Revolution, William and Mary became joint sovereigns, ruling together from February 1689 until Mary's death in 1694. William then ruled alone until his death in 1702.
