8o. Errata leaf bound after preliminaries with additional errata on recto of last leaf. Original green cloth, gilt-lettered on spine (rebacked, some minor rubbing). Provenance: Henry Middleton (signature on front pastedown and title-page).

FIRST EDITION. This copy conforms to the Norman copy, described as a later issue, with the cancelled title and with Boole's name on the spine. Boole invented the first practical system of logic in algebraic form that enabled numerous advances in logic to be made in the 19th century. His work led to the creation of set theory and probability theory in mathematics, to the philosophical work of Peirce, Russell, Whitehead, and Wittgenstein, and also to computer technology when Claude Shannon recognized that the true/false values in Boole's two-valued logic were analogous to the open and closed states of electric circuits. Norman 266; Origins of Cyberspace 224.
