FIRST EDITION OF HERSCHEL'S DISCOVERY OF URANUS. In August 1781, Herschel observed through his telescope an object he initially thought was a comet. Additional observations by other astronomers determined that the object was a primary planet in the solar system. Named Uranus, Herschel became world-famous as the first recorded discoverer of a planet. Dibner Heralds of Science 13; Norman 1058.
