FIRST EDITION of Pearson's monumental and exhaustive textbook of astronomy in which he paid great attention to astronomical instruments. Pearson, one of the original proprietors of the Royal Institution and a founding member of the Astronomical Society of London, devoted the first volume of Practical Astronomy to tables intended to facilitate the reduction of astronomical observations, while in the second volume, he made elaborate descriptions of various astronomical instruments along with engravings of them and instructions for their use. For this publication he received the gold medal from the Astronomical Society on 13 February 1829.
