2o (12½ x 7¾ in.). Vol.1 (only, of 2). Approbation page facing title, text in legal French, English, and Latin, printed in roman and black-letter types. Contemporary sheep (Worn, covers loose). Internally a fine, clean copy. Black leather pull-off protective box.
SIGNED AND WITH STOCKTON'S RARE BOOKPLATE: A LAW TEXT FROM THE LIBRARY OF RICHARD STOCKTON. Front pastedown bearing the attractive engraved armorial bookplate of "Richard Stockton A. M." Partly effaced signature ("Richard Stockton 1780" on corner of flyleaf; clear ink signature ("Richard Stockton's") on the second (English-language) title. Stockton, a highly regarded New Jersey jurist and delegate to the Continental Congress, suffered capture and a harsh imprisonment by the British during the Revolution. On his release he returned to Morven, his home near Princeton, to find that it had been looted. He died in 1781, before the successful conclusion of the Revolution. Also with a later ex-dono inscription on first title: "The gift of Richard Stockton Esqr. To his brother Lucius...Stockton March 20 1820."
