24 volumes, tall 8o, including original steel-engraved plate in cloth folding box. Engraved title vignettes and plates, facsimile wrappers from the original parts. Original buckram, each volume in a different color, black morocco spine labels lettered in gilt, top edges gilt, others uncut (a few spines slightly faded, some occasional minor rubbing). Provenance: Arthur A. Wells, original subscriber (invitation to a tea to pick up his steel plate laid in cloth box).

THE NONESUCH DICKENS. LIMITED EDITION, number 404 of 877 sets. The original steel plate by Hablot K. Browne ("Phiz"), set into a uniform cloth box with a letter of authenticity signed by the Deputy Chairman of Chapman & Hall, is titled "Mr. Pickwick and Sam in the attorney's office" (from Pickwick Papers).
