Lot Essay
Louis Süe (1875-1968) and André Mare (1885-1932) both trained as painters before setting up their own ateliers and eventually forming a partnership called La Compagnie des Arts Modernes, later known as Süe et Mare (1919-28). They worked across the spectrum of the decorative arts from wallpapers to furniture, the latter most often made of exotic woods, and are remembered both for the restrained and elegant lines of their productions and their clever associations with artists en vogue such as Poiret, Duchamp-Villon and Jean Patou.
