The lozenge-shaped backplates, conceived in the late 18th Century Egyptian manner and formed like mirrored obelisks tipped with lotus-flowered 'Osiris' sun-discs, frame an elephant mask, such as feature on Roman marble candelabra illustrated in G.B. Piranesi's, Vasi, candelabri, cippi., Rome, 1769. Related sconces were sold anonymously, A.P. Tajan, Paris, 17 March 1975, lot 17, each featuring 'Anubis' jackal-head supports.
