PALESTINIAN, DATED 1765
A representation of Palestine, bordered at the top by mountains and the river Jordan against starry heavens; the walls of Jerusalem dominating the centre, enclosing holy locations where Biblical events occurred, the interior of the Rotunda of the Resurrection including the Crucifixion of Christ on Golgotha with the Sacrifice of Abraham directly above, to the left, under a red canopy with hanging oil lamps, the Embalmment of Christ, next the Patriarch emerging from the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre, holding the candles which had miraculously been lit from Christ's Tomb, followed by the actual Resurrection, adjacently the emperor, Saint Constantine the Great,and his Mother Elena raising the True Cross; the landscape around the walls scattered with representations of other Scriptural episodes, notably Christological scenes, for example the Baptism at the top and the Nativity to the right; the Holy City flanked by portraits of the Mother of God surrounded by Old Testament Prophets and Christ the Vine; the compartment to the left in three sections emphasising the Crucifixion, Deposition, and Lamentation of Christ; the top register enumerating the Passion Cycle and other New Testament events; the side borders portraying images of Church Fathers with Sts. George and Demetrius on the first row to the left and right respectively; the four corners depicting the Apocalyptic Personifications of the Evangelists; the graphic composition painted with bold colours; the dedication in the lower part reading Sergios Georgios Pilgrim to the Holy Sepulchre 1765
