RUSSIAN, 18TH CENTURY
The central image flanked by two columns, each with ten compartments; the left group showing the Creation of the World, beginning with God the Father in blessing, the Holy Spirit above Him; the right with saints, martyrs and events of the New Testament; the upper part of the main section depicting the Holy Trinity with Christ appearing in form of Emmanuel on the lap of Lord Sabaoth, supported by three seraphs against a round, radiating glory, the outer blue circle scattered with stars and angels, flanked by the celestial hosts, and the sun and moon against swirling clouds; the lower spherical composition portraying the New Testament Trinity, with the seated figures of Christ and God the Father flanking a globe, surmounted by the instruments of the Passion and the Holy Spirit above, at the sides the Mother of God and St. John the Baptist forming a Deisis, the Evangelical Tetramorph at the corners, surrounded by angels of various ranks; the lower section focusing on St. Michael, the Horseman of the Apocalypse, plunging his spear into the mouth of the Devil, raising the Gospels and heralding the Second Coming, the King of the Underworld enthroned in the open mouth of the monster of Hell, amidst the crowd of sinners, to the left and right the story of Adam and Eve; the entire work rendered with vivid colours, the haloes, wings and details in gold
