Lot Essay

"Although at first I thought it was not a complex project, this piece provided more problems than anticipated. (...) The series started with three-part pieces because a cube implies three dimensions and, of course, ends with one eleven-part piece (one bar removed). In this case, if one understands the idea of a cube, one may mentally reconstruct the cube, filling in the missing bars."

(Sol Lewitt, quoted in Sol Lewitt, retrospective, exh.cat., The Museum of Modern Art, New York 1978, p. 81.)
