Lot Essay

The poem can be translated as follow:
'The green mountain stands straight up into the white clouds
As the sun sets on the countryside, the roosters and the dogs quiet down
The river is empty and the fishermen are gone
The peach blossoms have fallen and villagers are closing their doors
Zhou Leyuan.'

Zhou Leyuan, the founder of the popular Beijing school of painting, was active between 1879 and 1893. Every artist of the first phase of the school owed a considerable debt to Zhou, and most began their careers by copying his style and signing his name; some even appear to have devoted most of their careers to producing copies of his work.

See three other bottles painted by the artist and dated from 1885, 1886 and 1888-91 with a similar inside-painted landscape and typical montains, illustrated in Moss, Graham, Tsang, The Art of the Chinese Snuff Bottle. The J & J Collection, pl.407, pl.409 and pl.414.
