Lot Essay
This form is taken from European faience originals; versions were made at Montpellier, Moustier and Doccia. A very similar single bulb-pot and cover was in the Mottahedeh Collection, illustrated by Howard and Ayers, China for the West, London and New York, 1978, vol.II, no.594 and sold at Sotheby's New York, 19 October 2000, lot 360. Another one is illustrated in Michel Beurdeley, Porcelaine de la Compagnie des Indes, Fribourg, Suisse 1962.
