Lot Essay

The faces of the figures with protuberant eyes, hooked noses, thin lips and moustaches suggest that they were intended to portray foreigners from West of China's borders. Their clothes and jewels together with this specific turban encourage this feeling.
See a comparable pair of bronze and cloisonné enamel foreigners from the Juan José Amezaga and Dolorès Feijoo collection sold in these Rooms, 7 December 2007, lot 7.
