Fred Hall, like his friend and colleague from student days, Frank Bramley, settled in Newlyn in the mid 1880s after studying in Lincoln and Antwerp. Both men strove for socially realistic scenes, using the crispness of the square brush technique. Hall left Newlyn altogether in 1897 and after his marriage the following year travelled regularly. The present work was painted in Edam in 1899.
