Launched in 1998, reference 5070 was first available in yellow gold, and subsequently in white and rose gold, each with a different dial colour, and all of which are now no longer in production. To mark the tenth anniversary of this classic chronograph Patek Philippe released a much anticipated platinum sibling in Basel Fair 2008, featuring a blue-metallic sunburst dial.

The beating heart of this reference is the calibre CH 27-70 manually wound "Nouvelle Lémania" base movement exclusively executed for Patek Philippe.
