The present drawing probably dates to circa 1764 when Chalgrin presented his architectural schema for the Church of St. Philippe-du-Roule, Paris. It conforms to a basilican plan akin to those from the sixteenth century, which went on to become a pervasive model for church architecture in France until well into the 19th century. The Church of St. Philippe-du-Roule is widely regarded as Chalgrin's most important commission.
