Lot Essay

Louis-Hippolyte Le Bas was a student of Charles Percier and Pierre-François-Léonard Fontaine. Following the exile of Napoleon, he oversaw the construction of Fontaine's design for the Chapelle Expiatoire - the burial site of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette - between the years 1816 and 1824.
Le Bas taught the History of Architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts (1840-1863) and was an influential figure in the teaching of a new generation of French architects.
