Lot Essay

The monument to John Hutt of H.M.S. Queen and Captain John Harvey of H.M.S. Brunswick was erected in 1804 and stands in the North Aisle of Westminster Abbey. John Hutt was killed on the 29th May 1794 in the lead up to the battle of Brest on 'The Glorious First of June.' Captain John Harvey died when his ship H.M.S. Brunswick engaged the Frenchman Vengeur and reduced her to a wreck. John Bacon was the successful artist in the competition to design the monument.
