Kowalski is recognized as the incomparable painter of untouched winter landscapes. In the present painting Kowalski depicts a group of hunters racing across the snow in their horsedrawn sleds. The dynamic of the scene is enhanced by the realistic spray of snow under the hooves of the horses and the sled. These landscapes have a nostalgic atmosphere which expresses a longing and admiration for the traditional Polish country life. The artist made a conscious effort to preserve that which he deemed at risk of being lost in a political breakup of his homeland between Russia, Prussia, and Austria. The present lot is a fine and typical example of Kowalski's efforts to translate the Polish cultural heritage to canvas.
