Salon is produced in very limited quantity and only in excellent years (an average of three vintages a decade) from over 40 year old vines in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger which is one of the greatest Grand Crus of the Côte de Blancs. The first commercial vintage was in 1921. Salon is made from 100 Chardonnay and has a delicate flavour when young, that develops additional complexity with age with notes of coconut, vanilla and honey. 1971 was an exceptional vintage, as Michael Broadbent wrote in his book Vintage Wine, "Now here is a vintage! More than good, at its best the epitome of elegance".

Salon Le Mensil Brut--Vintage 1971
Very good appearance. Lots 494 to 498 in original tissues
Tasting Note: Most recently: palish, attractive, very little sparkle; refined, old straw and walnuts; fairly dry, showing considerable maturity but very good, with exceptional persistence of flavour. 'Refined' noted again. **** M.B.
