Lot Essay

The vivaciously scrolling carved frames of these armchairs, typify the opulence of Venetian chair-making. Related Venetian armchairs are illustrated in S. Levy, Il Mobile Veneziano del Settecento, Milan, vol. I, 1964, figs. 5 and 12, Another related armchair decorated with floral painted decoration is illustrated in H. Huth LACQUER OF THE WEST, Chicago, 1971, plate 117. A comparable pair of Venetian armchairs was sold Christie's King Street, 13 June 2002, lot 19.
