Sale room notice
Please note the sitter is not Louis XIV but Edouard Colbert, Marquis de Villacerf, and the bust is made after an example by Martin van der Bogaert, called Desjardins.
The original bust of Villacerf (1629-1699) at the age of 63 was modelled by Desjardins (Breda 1640-Paris 1694), but none of the three existing versions (including the one in the Louvre) is by his own hand as the original offered to the Academy on April 4 1693 has disappeared.
