Such handsome leather jugs or bombards, serving as 4 quart ale measures often formed part of the ornamental furniture of the Servants Hall (O. Baker, Black Jacks & Leather Bottells, London, 1921). A pair of large 19th Century blackjacks commissioned by the Ogilvie family with mounts by Thomas Clark, Edinburgh, was acquired by John, 4th Marquess of Bute, for Dumfries House, Scotland (Dumfries House, Christie's London, sale catalogue, 12-13 July 2007, lot 1).
