This picture shows Mr Robert Pigott's famous horse Shark beating Lord Abingdon's Leviathan over the Beacon course at Newmarket for 1,000 gns. on 5th April 1777. Shark conceeded 7lbs and scored one of his nineteen victories. The horses had met in 1776 (Shark again won that time - at level weights). However, we know it is the 1777 race since Pigott changed his colours from 'Pink' to what was called 'Bloom colour, with Green cap'. Lord Abingdon had 'Blue & White stripes' for both matches.
