Lot Essay
Movable writing or chamber tables such as this one were tremendously popular during the Regency period. The model relates to Gillow's design for a 'spindle table' illustrated in the Estimate Sketch Book of 1818 (G. Wills, Craftsmen and Cabnet-Makers of Classic English Furniture, London, 1974, p.123), and the tables were made with a huge number of variations on the basic design. Among these was a pair from The Humphrey Whitbread Collection, sold Christie's London, 5 April 2001, lot 379, and another, probably previously supplied to Edward Lascelles, 1st Earl of Harewood, for Harewood House, Yorkshire, sold Christie's London, 9 July 1998, lot 124.
