Lot Essay

Matthew Prior, a diplomat at the Court of Louis XIV and poet, died in 1721 and was buried in Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey. The tomb, designed by James Gibbs, incorporates Antoine Coysevox's bust of Prior presented by King Louis XIV.
