Lot Essay

The present portrait appears to be based on the full-length portrait of King James I thought to be by John de Critz (in a private collection), in which the sitter appears in an ostrich plumed and jewelled hat. He was also painted three-quarter-length by the artist (in the National Maritime Museum, London).
