The sitter was the son of John Speke (1651/2-1728), a politician and Monmouth rebel, and his second wife Elizabeth, daughter and co-heir of Robert Pelham of Compton Valence, Dorset. George Speke followed his father and grandfather into politics as a Whig, serving in parliament in 1722 and 1747. He was the father of Anne, wife of Frederick, 2nd Earl Guilford.
