We are grateful to Sir John Guinness for drawing our attention to Farrer's catalogue of portraits of the North family, in which the present portrait is attributed to George Clarke, presumably George Frederick Clarke (fl. 1834-1870).

Lot Essay

The sitter was the third daughter of the Rev. the Hon. William Eden, and wife of Dudley, Lord North (1829-1860), son of Francis, 6th Earl of Guilford. After the death of her husband, Charlotte Maria married secondly Maj. A.G. Dickson, 13th Lt. Dragoons, M.P. Dover. Her first son by Lord North, Dudley Francis, became the 7th Earl.
