Lot Essay
Born in the Ukraine, Kramer came to England in 1900, settling in the Jewish colony in Leeds. Initially studying at Leeds School of Art, he continued his tuition at the Slade School in London (1913-14). Fellow students at the Slade included Bomberg (see lots 34-35), Rosenberg and Gertler (see lot 27). Although influenced by the vorticists and other contemporary movements, Kramer never succombed completely to them and his lifelong interest was in portraiture.
