Lot Essay
These elegant stools are marked 'TH', which corresponds to the mark of the Château des Tuileries during the French Restauration (1815-1830).
Commissioned by Catherine de Médicis in 1564, the Palais des Tuileries was redecorated in the Empire Neoclassical style for Napoléon I under the direction of Pierre François Léonard Fontaine and Charles Percier.
Jean-Pierre Louis, maître in 1787, is recorded in 1811 as one of the fournisseurs du garde meuble Impérial. He supplied a significant number of pieces to the administration impériale and is recorded as having collaborated with Jacob-Desmalter on furniture for the duc de Richelieu.
A related pair of stools, formerly in the Chateau des Tuileries and bearing a similar paper label and date, was sold, le Goût Steinitz III, Christie's, London, 6 December 2007, lot 436 (£35,300 including premium). A stool by Jean-Pierre Louis, formerly in the Lagerfeld Collection, was sold, Christie's, Monaco, 28-29 April 2000, lot 138.
