John Carr (1723-1807) was born in Horbury, near Wakefield and Langford Hall, near Newark is a fine example of his domestic architecture and dates to circa 1780. He also worked in collaboration with Robert Adam on his commission for Harewood House (1755-1771). This mezzotint portrait depicts John Carr aged seventy-six seated with plans of Buxton Crescent and with the spire of St. Peter's Horbury in the distance. The original picture by Sir William Beechey is in the Collection of the National Portrait Gallery (NPG 4062).
