Lot Essay

This sofa-table with Grecian plinth-supported pillars and reed-gadrooned top bears some similarity to a model by William Trotter's, circa 1820 for Penicuik House, Scotland (F.Bamford, Dictionary of Edinburgh Furniture Makers,1983 pl. 75a.) This form also relates to examples in George Smith's Household Furniture, 1808 pl. 70. A simplified version from Croxteth Hall sold at Christie's, London, 17 September 1973, lot 19.
