Lot Essay

James Thomas Linnell was the second son of John Linnell. He lived in London and later at Redhill in Surrey. His rustic landscapes show a clear debt to his father but employ a brighter coloured palette. The present picture is probably based on drawings that the artist made during his honeymoon, a walking tour in Wales, with reference to sketches made along the south coast three years before.

We are grateful to David Linnell for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.
