Lot Essay

For an example of another yellow jade snuff bottle made at the court, see lot 77. This shape is extremely unusual, but can still be seen as a modified meiping, a shape extremely popular for snuff bottles at the Court. A final feature which confirms its Palace origin is the substantial depth of the base (6mm), a standard feature of jade snuff bottles from the Palace, as discussed by Moss, Graham, Tsang in A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles, Vol. 1, Jade, under no. 75, where no. 78 is of similar material, and a related shape, also with flat faceted sides.
