ANATOLE DE SCITIVAUX DE GREISCHE

1863 Hunting and Shooting Book, manuscript on paper, entries dated 1862-1869. 2°, 60pp., title-page with deer's head and hunting vignette in watercolour, in four sections titled: "Orléans Harriers", "Fox Hounds", "Stag Hounds", and "Shooting", each opening with a representative scene in watercolour, "shooting" with one additional highland scene, title lettering in gilt and black, headings in gilt, each page in columns with printed border, partially completed in manuscript (occasional light spotting or browning), blue morocco gilt by Gruel, covers with crowned monogram of the Duc de Chartres, blue watered-silk liners, gilt turn-ins (some scuff marks and tears in leather).

A decorative manuscript dedicated on the title-page to "Monseigneur le Duc de Chartres", presumably Robert d'Orleans, duc de Chartres (1840-1910), by Comte Anatole de Scitivaux de Greische (b. 1812). It appears likely that the Comte himself painted the watercolour miniatures. About half the book has been used, recording the Duc de Chartre's hunting activities in England and Ireland, and his runs with the Cotswold, Heythrop, Garth, Surrey Union, Pytchley and other packs from 1862 to 1869.
