THOMAS THORNTON
A Sporting Tour through various Parts of France in the Year 1802. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme, 1806. 2 volumes, 4° (325 x 254mm), engraved frontispiece portrait in volume I, folding aquatint frontispiece in volume II, additional engraved titles and 51 plates, all but 6 uncoloured aquatints, 2 engraved leaves of music, engraved vignettes, one additional engraved plate: "Plan of the Entrance of Thornville Royal" (titles lightly spotted and with light offsetting, occasional spotting throughout), contemporary diced calf gilt (rebacked with old spines relaid, quite rubbed, a few small stains on sides).
The British Museum Catalogue online lists an edition in 1805, whereas Schwerdt's copy is dated 1805-6. Abbey states that "it seems possible that there were editions in 1805 and 1806, some copies having one volume dated 1805 and the second 1806. The Dedication, however, is dated March 31, 1806. As the dedication implies, Thornton gave the manuscript to an old school friend ... with permission to publish it, and it is probable that the 1805 edition was put out ... without the dedication". Abbey Travel 84; Schwerdt II, pp. 259-61; Tooley 488. (2)
