WILLIAM AUGUSTUS OSBALDISTON
The British Sportsman, or, Nobleman, Gentleman, and Farmer's Dictionary, of Recreation and Amusement. London: by J. Stead, sold by Champante and Whitrow, [n.d., title dated 1792 in manuscript but paper watermarked 1796 and 1798]. 4° (285 x 224mm), engraved frontispiece and 41 plates (most plates lightly browned, one plate detached, upper corner of pp. 891-892 almost torn away, affecting text but without loss, occasional light spotting, stronger on final leaf), later cloth-backed boards, uncut (rather worn). Provenance: Elizabeth Berney Relict, Bracon Ash, Norfolk (bookplate).
Originally published in 42 parts. Schwerdt II, p. 54, gives the date of the first edition as 1792, but the work appears to have gone on being issued, without any change to the undated title-page, up to at least 1798. This copy is signed 8G on p. 659 and has the index on the final leaf as called for in ESTC online. Mellon/Podeschi 70.
