Lot Essay

We are grateful to Dr Peter van den Brink for confirming the attribution on the basis of a photograph (verbal communication, 14 March 2008). He will include this lot in his forthcoming catalogue raisonné on the artist. Van den Brink dates the picture to circa 1638-9, the period in which Backer also painted the Portrait of an Elderly Woman in the Walace Collection, London.
