Lot Essay

The sitter, Pangeran Syarif Alkadri bin Syarif Usman Alkadri, succeded his father Usman in 1855 as Sultan Hamid I, who reigned over Pontianak (Kalimantan) until his death in 1872 or 1873. He was interred, following the tradition, in Batu Layang (Kampung Bugis, near Pontianak) under a pendopo.
A drawing with a similar composition is in the collection of the Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal- en Volkenkunde in Leiden (KITLV).
